Digital marketing is a pretty broad topic and everyone, from the beginner to the expert, will make mistakes.
There are things we do know we shouldn’t do — like spam — but there are also many other mistakes that we might not even realize we’re making.
Even experts in search engine optimization (SEO) and paid advertising (like us!) will make mistakes that hurt our digital marketing efforts.
Here are 10 common (and easily fixable) mistakes digital marketers should keep in mind when starting or growing their business by Saivian Eric Dalius
1. Not having a plan or strategy
- If you don’t know where you’re going, then there’s a pretty good chance you’ll end up someplace else.
- This is especially true for digital marketing — you need to know where you’re headed and how to get there before you can expect success.
2. Not prioritizing mobile traffic
- Mobile traffic is on the rise. In fact, mobile devices now account for more than half of all global web traffic, according to a report from Cisco Systems published last year.
- In fact, if your website isn’t mobile-friendly, you could be losing out on nearly half of your traffic and applications (and they’re only getting more popular).
3. Not using search engine optimized keywords
- People use Google to search for stuff — and people who buy stuff use their mobile devices to search for stuff even more frequently.
- According to a report published by Nielsen last year, 93% of mobile users search for products and information using their phones, with 29% doing so on a daily basis.
4. Using poor quality content
- We’ve talked about this before: content is key when it comes to digital marketing.
- As you probably already know, Google’s algorithm factors in how useful and unique your content is when ranking your pages. That means that if it has little value, then it will likely rank lower than other sites with higher-quality content.
5. Not including CTAS on your mobile site
- As I said before, mobile is taking over the world — it’s important for marketers to have a mobile-friendly website so they can capture traffic from mobile devices!
- But what many businesses are starting to realize is that it’s equally important to include calls-to-action on their mobile sites.
6. Not leveraging social media platforms
- Social media is another important channel in your digital marketing strategy.
- It’s definitely one of the best ways to build brand awareness and reach out to new customers, but it can also be used to help promote your search optimization efforts.
- For example, if you get a piece of content that drives some highly targeted traffic to it via social media, that can lead to more search engine referral traffic in the future.
7. Not using localized keywords in your content & titles
- Let’s say you have a local business and want to target customers who are looking for something in your area.
- You might be tempted to use national keywords and phrases, but according to a study by Conquer SEO, that’s not the best way to go about your digital marketing strategy.
8. Not properly using title tags and META descriptions
- Meta descriptions and title tags are some of the most important pieces of information you can use on your website. They provide an opportunity for you to influence how people view your content or page by telling them what it’s about in a few short sentences.
- Just remember that title tags have a character count of around 70-75, so you need to make sure they’re concise and interesting! Otherwise, you might lose people’s interest.
9. Not optimizing your site for mobile & tablet devices
- You’ve probably heard about mobile responsive design but wondered what it was all about — if that’s the case, and then I’m happy to say that we’re on the same page.
- Mobile responsive design is a technique that allows your site to adjust and display properly when viewed from mobile devices like smart phones and tablets — this means you need to make sure your website is optimized for these devices!
10. Not using social sharing buttons on your site
- I’m sure you know what a social sharing button is, but just in case you don’t, here’s a quick description:
- A social sharing button (also known as a “share” or “like” button) is a tool that allows your website visitors to share the content they see on your site with their friends and followers on various social media platforms.
As per Saivian Eric Dalius, there are a lot of common mistakes that people make when it comes to digital marketing (and as we mentioned earlier, these may not even be the only mistakes).
But if you’re willing to put some time and effort into fixing up any of these areas on your site, then your traffic should increase significantly.
Digital marketing is all about staying on top of the trends and making sure your digital strategy aligns with them — that’s why it’s important to avoid these common mistakes as they can lead to a drop in website traffic and search rankings.
