Tattoo Dos and Don’Ts: Why You Shouldn’t Drink Before Inking

It can be both exciting and nerve-racking to get a new tattoo. You might be tempted by liquid courage before your appointment to help ease anxiety. You may think this is a good idea, but it’s not. Heavy drinking before getting tattooed is an absolute no-no.

Less Control Over Your Body

While getting a tattoo, your skin is pierced 50 to 3,000 times every minute. You can spend hours in the chair depending on how big your tattoo is. The trauma caused to your skin can be physically and mentally draining. Alcohol only adds to the pain.

You may be unknowingly fidgeting as you are not as in control as you would be when sober. This means that you will have to say goodbye to crisp, straight lines! Don’t think of using the toilet. Alcohol is a diuretic and can cause kidneys to release excessive water. This can lead to dehydration or frequent trips to the toilet. You will be in pain, the artist may find it annoying and you could pass out from dehydration if you take too many breaks. This is not a combination that works.

Lack of Judgment

When it comes to selecting something to be permanently attached to your body, there are many things to consider. Alcohol can impair your judgment and vision. You’ll be more likely to do whatever you want just for fun. You can have fun until the next day when you wake up with a bad hangover and a tattoo.

Thinned Blood

Alcohol consumption may temporarily thin the blood, making it more difficult to clot. The artists’ stencil can be damaged by excessive bleeding, and it will also make it difficult for them to tattoo you with a smooth result. Ink will pull out the skin as quickly as it is applied. The result will be an uneven and unattractive tattoo.

Integrity

You should also refrain from drinking alcohol before your tattoo appointment out of courtesy and respect for both yourself and the artist/tattoo shop. It’s embarrassing to act foolish and then forget it the next morning. It’s not ideal for tattoo artists to work with intoxicated people. They are there to bring your visions to life. There will also be more than likely other clients in the shop who may doubt the integrity of the shop if they witness the artist working alongside a drunk client. You will be turned down by most artists if they see you drunk, so don’t put yourself and the artist in this situation.
